Long Beach Island
Images of and near Long Beach Island, New Jersey, my beloved and inspirational retreat. I have been coming to Long Beach Island since I was a toddler in the early 1950s. As a young boy I would play in abandoned pound fishing boats with their lap-straked hulls and rusted shafts. In my teens I laid on the beach listening to the Beach Boys, Tommy James and the Shondells and Jan and Dean and imagined I was one of the cool surfer types. Later I would travel down to the Lucy Evelyn and rent boats at Polly's Dock, and later still would hang out at a Bay Village head shop and listen to Bob Dylan. The ocean was an undulating magnet for my imagination. On it I would picture sea monsters and pirate ships or German submarines. Above it were kites and blimps and airplanes pulling banners. Beyond its horizon I could sense all the foreign shores of the earth and felt like I could reach out and touch them with my outstretched hand. Though much is different about the Island today, each time I visit I re-live these memories and forge new ones. I try to capture with images the stark beauty and timeless majesty of this place and the dynamic relationship between sea, sky and man that plays out here.
